Education and Research Permit Policies

Click below for policies pertaining to your class or research:

If you have any questions or concerns about the permit system, please contact us.

1.  If you will be teaching classes/conducting research in the Reserve, but not placing equipment or flagging:

Simply fill out an Education and Research Use application at least 3 days before the event.  A separate form needs to be on file for Semester 1, Semester 2, and the Summer Semester.

We will quickly review your project plans in order to minimize use conflict and other problems. We will contact you if more information is needed.

If the project does not conflict with others, we will send you a confirmation via e-mail.

If the class involves collecting information or researching the site, please send a summary of the data to Schmeeckle Reserve by the end of the semester.  This information will be placed on our website and shared with UWSP faculty/staff and students and the general public.

2.  If you will be placing equipment or flagging in Schmeeckle Reserve:

Fill out an Education and Research Use application at least 7 days before the start.  A separate form needs to be on file for Semester 1, Semester 2, and the Summer Semester.

We will quickly review your project plans in order to minimize use conflict and other problems. We will contact you if more information is needed.

If the project does not conflict with others, you will be sent a permit via e-mail with a unique Permit ID Number and statement that will serve to discourage vandalism and theft.

Be sure that this Permit ID Number is clearly visible on all equipment (traps, tarps, boxes, etc.) and flagging before placing in the Reserve.

Any equipment or flagging without a Permit ID Number is removed by Schmeeckle personnel as a function of routine maintenance.

All equipment and flagging must be removed by the end date listed on your permit.

The person listed on the permit is responsible for sending a summary of the data collected to Schmeeckle Reserve by the end of the semester.  This information will be placed on our website and shared with UWSP faculty/staff and students and the general public.

3.  If you need special permission to conduct activities normally prohibited by Schmeeckle regulations (collecting, motorized vehicle access, evening/overnight access, etc.):

Fill out an Education and Research Use application at least 7 days before the start.  Include your specific needs on the application. A separate form needs to be on file for Semester 1, Semester 2, and the Summer Semester.  Click here for a current list of regulations.

We will quickly review your project plans in order to minimize use conflict and other problems. We will contact you if more information is needed.

If the project does not conflict with others, you will be sent a permit via e-mail with a unique Permit ID Number.  The permit information will be sent to Protective Services.

When out on the site, the permit must be with you at all times.  Protective Service officers can issue fines for violation of regulations if permits are not available.

Special permission is only applied to the specific dates and times on your permit.  Any activity that is prohibited by regulations outside of these times is subject to a fine.

The person listed on the permit is responsible for sending a summary of the data collected to Schmeeckle Reserve by the end of the semester.  This information will be placed on our website and shared with UWSP faculty/staff and students and the general public.
