Lake Joanis
Lake
Joanis is a 24-acre
lake and island in the southeast corner of Schmeeckle Reserve. Its maximum
depth is 27 feet.
Buffered from the surrounding city by
natural vegetation, few people realize that the lake is manmade. In
1975, Sentry Insurance needed
fill for the construction of its
new world headquarters.
Partnering with the UW-Stevens
Point Foundation, Sentry
excavated the lake to obtain
fill and create a natural focal
point for campus. This
development led to the creation
of Schmeeckle Reserve.
Today, the lake
harbors a variety of plants and
animals, serves as an important
resting area for migrating
waterfowl, and provides
recreational opportunities for
the campus and community.
