Annual Private Well Water Quality Report

In 2006, nearly 3,000 private well water samples were tested at the UWSP Water and Environmental Analysis Lab and entered into the Center's data base.

  • Of these 11% of those contained an unsafe nitrate level (greater than 10 mg/l nitrate-nitrogen).

  • Coliform bacteria was present in 17% of the wells tested.

  • Fifty percent of the samples tested detected a measurable amount of triazine the most widely used herbicide in WI.

  • Twelve organized drinking water sampling and education programs were conducted in Iowa, Calumet, Taylor, Pierce, Brown, Kewaunee, Dodge, Sauk, Iowa, Lafayette and Green Counties.

Teacher Training Using Groundwater Flow Models

In January 2007,  teachers from 24 Wisconsin schools will be participating in a day-long workshop in Eau Claire, Mukwonago, or Tomahawk to learn about groundwater and how to use a physical model of groundwater flow in the classroom.

This project is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with wellhead protection funds provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
