COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL

STUDIES SEMINAR

HISTORY OF THE SEMINAR:

Since 1972, students, faculty, and staff from the College of Natural Resources have traveled to Germany annually to learn first-hand about European environmental problems and natural resource management practices.  This program was developed in cooperation with the forest service of the state of Baden-Württemberg, which also provides accommodations in one of its environmental education centers.

In subsequent years, visits to Poland and Iceland have been added to the itinerary, which offers the student opportunities to compare and contrast several methods for solving environmental problems and managing natural resources.

PURPOSE OF THE SEMINAR:

The UWSP catalog describes the course as follows:  Natural Resources 475/675.  European Environmental Studies Seminar.  Survey environmental problems and programs in Europe; compare with U.S. environmental and natural resource issues.  Prereq: 2.00 GPA in major and cons. Instr, NRES 150, 151, 250 and 251.

This course is divided into three components:

Spring Semester Orientation, 1 credit

NATURAL RESOURCES 475/675 – European Environmental Studies Seminar

Mondays - 16:00-17:50    CNR 122      Additional field trips required

CWES Field Studies, 2 credits

Dates: May 22 to June 2, 2006

Undergraduates in the College of Natural Resources who are choosing this summer seminar in lieu of Treehaven will attend a two-week shortened summer camp at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station.  This camp will provide students with field techniques in preparation for advanced coursework in the College of Natural Resources.

European Environmental Studies Seminar, 5 credits

Included in this seminar are lectures and field studies on environmental problems and resource management practices in Germany, Poland, Iceland and other European countries.  An abbreviated itinerary follows.

Program costs cannot be finalized until early May, 2006.  The following fees were assessed in the summer of 2005.  An increase of $400-700 due to tuition increases, fuel surcharges on airline tickets and currency exchange rate fluctuations is possible.

·         Minnesota residents should expect to pay approximately a $150 tuition surcharge with approved reciprocity.

·         Non-residents should anticipate a $500 tuition surcharge for 2006.  Great news for non-residents as the non-resident surcharge has lowered from $2500 for 2004 to $500 for 2005/2006 due to a newly approved policy on study abroad financing!!!

Scholarship:  If you have received an email from Paul Watson, Interim Director, UWSP Financial Aids that was sent to those students eligible for the State of Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant AND have been accepted to the Summer 2006 seminar, stop in the International Programs Office, Room 108 CCC for a scholarship application form.  The Wisconsin Legislature approves funding for this scholarship each year. Funds are available for Summer 2006 but are not guaranteed for Summer 2007.

Additional CNR Scholarships are available to students who are studying abroad who completed the CNR Scholarship application in September, 2005.
