GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Student Success Center Hours
Sue will be gone on a recruitment trip this week and will not have walk in hours. The CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) is open Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30pm.

!Application To The CNR
Students who have completed 45 cr. and have a 2.00 GPA in major must apply for formal acceptance into the College of Natural Resources. Application forms are available in the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180). The deadline for applications is Sept. 28.

Timetable Now Online
The timetable for spring semester 2008 is now available online. You can access it through your MyPoint page under the academics tab.

!Freshman and Sophomores
Peer advising begun. Come in soon so you can get ready to register for classes next semester. A sign up sheet will be available outside of the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180).

New Majors
New majors in Resource Management: Law Enforcement and Resource Management: Policy are now available. Stop by CNR 180 to add these majors or to pick up the planning sheets.

European Seminar Informational Meeting
The informational meeting for the 2008 European Environmental Studies Seminar to Poland, Iceland and Germany will be held on Mon, Oct. 22 at 5pm in CNR 120. The application for this program will be on-line after the meeting.

GIS Pre-registration
If you plan on taking a GIS class next semester (Geography 279 or 476) you must pre-register with the geography department. The dates for pre-registration are Oct. 22-Nov. 1. You may pre-register at the Geography/Geology Department office, Science D332.

Help make sure the tax on your hunting and fishing equipment is going to the right place!
To continue getting Wisconsin's share of the federal excise tax you pay when you buy hunting and fishing equipment, DNR needs to update its Fish, Wildlife and Habitat Management Plan for 2007-2013. You can help! Please take this survey to share your thoughts on natural resource issues and priorities Wisconsin needs to address over the next six years.

Hey CNR Students! EVERY WEEK SGA votes on legislation that directly affects you as students! Let your CNR Senators know how YOU feel and what YOU want. Check out our new board in the first floor, south hallway of the CNR (right by the West Lobby). Share your thoughts and opinions on the latest legislation and take time to express any concerns you have for UWSP. We are here to represent you! Stop by and have your voice heard!

American Water Resources Association (AWRA)
Meetings are every Tues. at 5pm in CNR 252.

The Wildlife Society

Society of American Foresters
Join SAF every Thurs. in CNR 170 at 5pm. We'll have a new "tree of the week", speaker, or activity for you every week. Hope to see you there!

Sustainable Agriculture in Communities Society NEW
The first annual harvest dinner will be Oct. 14 at 6pm in the CPS Café hosted by SACS. There will be a lot of great food, music, speakers, and a presentation about what we did this summer in the garden. You can pick up tickets at the ticket office in the University Book Store.  Stop by our meetings on Tues. 7:30pm CPS 234. Herpetology Society Meetings
Meetings are Mondays at 6PM in CNR 354. If you have a passion for Reptiles and Amphibians this is the place to be! Come and learn hands on care, handling, identifying and interesting facts about native and non-native herpetiles. The Herpetology Society has many speakers and field trips planned so come and join the fun.

Our next meeting will be Wed. Oct. 10, 5pm in the WCEE(4th Floor Library) see you then.

Women in Natural Resources (WiNR)
Sat, Oct. 6, 12:30pm - ? – Apple and pumpkin picking at Helene’s Hilltop Orchard in Merrill. Afterwards, we will be baking up apple pies at Sue’s house!  Sue will provide sloppy joes for supper and we can eat the pies and ice cream for dessert!! Resume Workshops
Fall resume workshops have been scheduled for the following dates and times. Workshops are open to all CNR and science majors and are free of charge. Here are the workshop sessions:

Workshops will be held in CNR 120 from 7 to 9 PM. All sessions are identical in content, so students need to attend only one program. Signup is NOT required. Make sure that you do not miss these outstanding opportunities.

Midwest Environmental Education Conference (MEEC) Student Scholarships Still Available
The Midwest EE Conference is being held at Country Springs Hotel right here in Stevens Point. The conference includes a keynote address by Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, as well as concurrent sessions, workshops, field trips, and plenary speakers. Thanks to the College of Natural Resources, there are a limited number of scholarships available to CNR students. The scholarship only covers registration. (Meals are not included.)

Conservation Leaders for Tomorrow will be holding a 1-credit class, NR 405, Oct. 11-14, 2007 where you can learn about hunting and participate in trap shooting and a pheasant hunt. Click title for more info and contacts.

Anyone hunting doves at Buena Vista
If you are willing to let your kill be sampled for trichomoniasis please contact Kristina Artner at kartn508@uwsp.edu. The sample is a simple oral swab taken within 2 days of the kill. Thanks.

2007 Fall Candlelight Hike: Going Batty at Schmeeckle Reserve
The Candlelight Hike will feature a one-mile torch-lit trail through Schmeeckle Reserve on Fri, Oct. 26 from 6:30-9:30pm. Eat like a bat if you dare! Make your very own bat puppet and paint a pumpkin for your doorstep while you're at it. We will also be offering a new program this year, “Bats of Schmeeckle” that will be put on by the students of the Environmental Education/Interpretation practicum. The bats of central Wisconsin will come to life as they share their stories of survival. Discover where our bats live, what they eat and how they hunt. `Also learn about the new bat monitoring station in Schmeeckle reserve and see how researchers monitor bats by recording their sounds.

Take a hike through Schmeeckle and see why the tree with the word "witch" in it is called the Halloween tree. Find out if this strange tree has special powers or just unique adaptations.

CNR Fall Migration Banquet NEW
CNR students are encouraged to invite their parents to the annual CNR Fall Migration banquet to benefit the CNR Endowment Fund. The event will be at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at 5pm. Treehaven Classes and Workshops

GPS/GIS-Global Positioning Systems & Geographic Information Systems
This is an introductory workshop with hands-on exercises. Learn how these fascinating new technologies are reshaping our world and creating new paradigms of understanding. With this computer based technology, you will find applications for almost anyone interested in natural resources. Equipment will be used outside part of the time. No previous experience is necessary. Attention UWSP Students:

Group Process and Facilitation Skills
Learn and practice group process and facilitation skills that can be used to develop highly effective teams that produce high quality results. Wolf Ecology Workshops
Experience shared learning with other wolf enthusiasts while tracking, studying in the classroom and field. You will experience actual tracking and a night time howling survey.
