Student Success Center Hours
Sue's walk-in hours will be Mon. from 1-2:30pm, Tues. from 2:30-4pm and Wed. and Thurs. from 10-11:30am. The CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) is open Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30pm.

Timetable Now Online
The timetable for spring semester 2008 is now available online. You can access it through your MyPoint page under the academics tab.

!Freshman and Sophomores
Peer advising has begun. Come in soon so you can get ready to register for classes next semester. A sign up sheet will be available outside of the CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180). Please sign your name legibly so that we can read it.

New Majors
New majors in Resource Management: Law Enforcement and Resource Management: Policy are now available. Stop by CNR 180 to add these majors or to pick up the planning sheets.

!GIS Pre-registration
If you plan on taking a GIS class next semester (Geography 279 or 476) you must pre-register with the geography department. The dates for pre-registration are Oct. 22-Nov. 1. You may pre-register at the Geography/Geology Department office, Science D332.

Help make sure the tax on your hunting and fishing equipment is going to the right place!
To continue getting Wisconsin's share of the federal excise tax you pay when you buy hunting and fishing equipment, DNR needs to update its Fish, Wildlife and Habitat Management Plan for 2007-2013. You can help! Please take this survey to share your thoughts on natural resource issues and priorities Wisconsin needs to address over the next six years.

Physics 201!
There have been four new sections of Physics 201 added to the Spring 2008 timetable.

Environmental Toxicology Lab - WATR 496/696 NEW
Water 496/696 will be offered during the Spring semester of 2008 on Tuesdays 2:00-4:30. This 2-credit course is offered only in even years. Students will learn how to perform biological assays that can be used to determine the presence of harmful substances in water or soil. These techniques have diverse practical applications for K-12 science teachers, Peace Corp volunteers as well as water resource professionals. Class size is limited. No prerequisites. Contact Ron Crunkilton for additional information.

Forestry 499 - Are you interested in working with non-industrial private forest landowners? NEW
Non-industrial private forest landowners own 59 percent of America's woodlands and 57 percent of Wisconsin's woodlands. They account for a majority of the wood that is harvested which supply America's forest products industry. Forestry 499 (Section 2) Private Forest Management is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary for agency, industry, and private consultant foresters to work with and develop forest stewardship management plans for these family forest landowners. This course will provide you with an introduction to Wisconsin's Managed Forest Law and Certified Plan Writer curriculum as well as the profession of consulting forestry in Wisconsin.

Forestry 499 (Section 2) Private Forest Management will be offered this coming spring semester. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have about this course or your advisor to see how it fits into your degree program.

International Education Week is around the corner (November 12-16) NEW

So is the 2nd Annual CNR International Photo contest! Yee haa!!!

Dust off that perfect international photo and enter it in the annual contest for CNR students and faculty. This year, we are requesting hard copy 5x7 submissions for display in the CNR Lobby. Students and faculty will judge. Prizes available. Photo entry due sometime during International Education Week. Two Categories: 1. Environment and Nature, 2. People and Culture. Ghana, West Africa: Sustainable Forestry in Tropical Ecosystems - Summer 2008 NEW

Northern Arizona University and University of Wisconsin -Stevens Point are offering a 3-week (3- credit) field course in sustainable forest management practices for tropical ecosystems in Ghana, West Africa. The course is taught in cooperation with local educators and research colleagues and includes time in both dry- and wet-tropical forest ecosystems. Check out our new board in the first floor, south hallway of the CNR (right by the West Lobby). Share your thoughts and opinions on the latest legislation and take time to express any concerns you have for UWSP. We are here to represent you! Stop by and have your voice heard!

American Water Resources Association (AWRA) NEW
Oct. 30- Come check out an exciting presentation on bankful measurements in SW Wisconsin by Jessica Haucke at our regular meeting time. This is the same presentation she will be giving at AWRA Nationals.
Nov. 6- Dan Eichsteadt will be giving a presentation on the Tomorrow/Waupaca River and our involvement with this project. Both of these should be very interesting. Meetings are every Tues. at 5pm in CNR 252.

The Wildlife Society

Meetings are Mondays at 6PM in CNR 354. If you have a passion for Reptiles and Amphibians this is the place to be! Come and learn hands on care, handling, identifying and interesting facts about native and non-native herpetiles. The Herpetology Society has many speakers and field trips planned so come and join the fun.

Resume Workshops
Fall resume workshops have been scheduled for the following dates and times. Workshops are open to all CNR and science majors and are free of charge. Here are the workshop sessions:

CNR T-shirt Design Contest
CNR shirts need a new design! If you are artistic and interested in winning $50, create your own design! All shirts must have UWSP, CNR, and College of Natural Resources written on them, and always have the majors listed on the back. Other than that, the sky is the limit! Designs must be done by Oct. 26 and turned in to CNR 180.

SCA Conservation in Action Multimedia Contest
The SCA is having a contest for creative, environmentally aware students to help raise awareness about environmental issues. Entries can be submitted in the form of a research project, thesis, video, website, or other multimedia project. For more information click on the title to view the website.

Midwest Environmental Education Conference (MEEC)

Anyone hunting doves at Buena Vista
If you are willing to let your kill be sampled for trichomoniasis please contact Kristina Artner at kartn508@uwsp.edu. The sample is a simple oral swab taken within 2 days of the kill. Thanks.

2007 Fall Candlelight Hike: Going Batty at Schmeeckle Reserve
The Candlelight Hike will feature a one-mile torch-lit trail through Schmeeckle Reserve on Fri, Oct. 26 from 6:30-9:30pm. Eat like a bat if you dare! Make your very own bat puppet and paint a pumpkin for your doorstep while you're at it. We will also be offering a new program this year, “Bats of Schmeeckle” that will be put on by the students of the Environmental Education/Interpretation practicum; this program will be presented at 7 & 8pm. The bats of central Wisconsin will come to life as they share their stories of survival. Discover where our bats live, what they eat and how they hunt. `Also learn about the new bat monitoring station in Schmeeckle reserve and see how researchers monitor bats by recording their sounds.

CNR Fall Migration Banquet
CNR students are encouraged to invite their parents to the annual CNR Fall Migration banquet to benefit the CNR Endowment Fund. The event will be at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at 5pm. Cash Bar, Dinner, Silent Auction, Live Auction, Raffles, and more. GPS/GIS-Global Positioning Systems & Geographic Information Systems
This is an introductory workshop with hands-on exercises. Learn how these fascinating new technologies are reshaping our world and creating new paradigms of understanding.
