Student Success Center Hours
Sue will will have walk-in hours on Mon. and Tues. from 1-2:30, and Wed. and Thurs. from 10-11:30. The CNR Student Success Center (TNR 180) is open Mon.-Thurs. 8-4:30pm and Fri 8-3pm.

CNR Career Fair
The CNR Career Fair will be held on Thurs, Feb. 21st from 10am-3pm in the TNR first floor lobbies. Approximately 35-40 companies and agencies will be present to provide information plus summer and permanent jobs to our students. Stop by and check out all the great opportunities available.

College of Natural Resources Undergraduate Student Research Symposium
The 8th annual College of Natural Resources Undergraduate Student Research Symposium is underway. The call for submission has started and they are due at midnight on Mar. 4. If you are looking for some financial help for your project look into the CNR Research Symposium Grant and the Clive A. Davis Memorial Research Award. Water Resource Internships NEW
There will be a general informational meeting for students interested in summer 2008 Water Resources internships Tues., Feb. 12 at 5pm in CNR 120.

!Spring Semester Resume Workshops
Workshops have been scheduled for students in the above majors. All sessions will be held in TNR 122 on the following dates and times:

Monday, February 4th             7 to 9 PM
Monday, February 18th           7 to 9 PM
Tuesday, February 19th          7 to 9 PM

Monday, March 3rd 7 to 9 PM

Tuesday, March 4th 7 to 9 PM

All sessions are identical in content, so students need to attend only one program.

The information obtained from one of these sessions will enable you to write a rough draft of your resume. Several individual appointments will be necessary to refine your draft and develop a strategy for your job search, but this initial group session is necessary to get started. Participants should be prepared to take notes. Registration/Signup is NOT required!

May 2008 grads who have not already attended a session should do so as soon as possible. December 2008 grads should plan on attending a session before the end of the semester. Continuing students who anticipate needing a resume for internships or summer jobs are encouraged to attend the early sessions.

Students and/or faculty from all disciplines are most welcome to attend, although these sessions are aimed at science majors.

Ghana, West Africa: Sustainable Forestry in Tropical Ecosystems - Summer 2008
Northern Arizona University and University of Wisconsin -Stevens Point are offering a 3-week (3- credit) field course in sustainable forest management practices for tropical ecosystems in Ghana, West Africa. The course is taught in cooperation with local educators and research colleagues and includes time in both dry- and wet-tropical forest ecosystems. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant
Have you wanted to travel internationally? Are you looking for extra money to do so? Do you have between 30 and 90 credit hours earned, and a GPA of at least 3.5? If you answered yes to these questions then be sure to check out the Study Abroad Grant (due February 18, 2008). Annually, fifty $1,000 grants are awarded by Phi Kappa Phi and last year three UWSP students won. You DO NOT have to be a member to apply but read their website for qualifications carefully. One condition is that the study abroad program must be taken between May 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009 (European Seminar would apply!). 1. Chinalink Fall Semester Environmental Studies Program at Nanjing University

The program offers the equivalent of a full year of Chinese language instruction (150 hours) alongside three tightly integrated courses focused on how the history, culture, economics and politics of contemporary China influence the country’s emerging environmental crisis and shape their quest for a path to sustainable development.

2. Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange (TREE)

CDS International, Inc. in cooperation with Bonn, InWEnt gGmbH, and with the support of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), is offering a Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange (TREE), a three-month summer internship program in Germany focusing on renewable energy.

TREE provides US students with an opportunity to complete paid professional internships in Germany focusing on renewable energy. Internships are available in a variety of professional fields, including, but not limited to engineering, chemistry, physics, material sciences, environmental economics and policy. The program will begin in late May with a week-long introductory seminar on the topic of renewable energy in Germany and the EU at the University of Kassel in Germany. The application deadline for this program is February 29, 2008.

The program includes the following:

-travel voucher for international travel -in-country transportation -1-week immersion seminar at the University of Kassel (including housing) -evaluation seminar in Germany -paid professional internship in the renewable energy field in Germany -health insurance

Program Requirements:

-US citizens or permanent residents - Full-time enrollment at an accredited US college or university. US citizens graduating in 2008 are also eligible. -Maximum age is 30

-Equivalent of at least two years of postsecondary German language study -Practical experience does not need to be extensive, but is required (summer employment, prior internship, lab position, etc.)

Environmental Educators and Naturalists Association (EENA/NAI)
If you are interested in helping to plan for Eco-Fair in the spring, then come to EENA meetings on Tuesday nights at 7pm in TNR 122. We will be planning out Earth Week and Eco-Fair events this semester.

The Wildlife Society
Welcome back everyone! The first meeting of The Wildlife Society will be held on Jan. 29, at 5pm in TNR 170. There are many projects taking place and there are many opportunities coming up that you can get involved in! Come hear about it all at the meeting- hope to see a lot of new faces!

Hey CNR Students! EVERY WEEK SGA votes on legislation that directly affects you as students! Let your CNR Senators know how YOU feel and what YOU want. Check out our new board in the first floor, south hallway of the TNR (right by the West Lobby). American Water Resources Association (AWRA) NEW

Society of American Foresters
Come to our weekly meetings on Thurs 5 pm, TNR 170 for tree of the week, speakers, and forestry current events.

This year's Forestry Banquet will be held on Thurs. Feb. 21 in the Alumni Room in the Dreyfus University Center. Reservations will be available in the CNR West Lobby from 9am- 4pm from Mon. Feb. 4 - Fri. Feb. 15. Reservations will be $13 for students and $18 for professional/non students. All reservations are due by Friday, February 15th.This years speaker will be Mr. Mark Knaebe from the USDA Forest Service. His focus areas include bioenergy, roundwood engineering, wood finishing, and international forestry. He will be speaking on biomass energy.

UWSP Fire Crew
If you're interested in a career in wildland fire fighting or would like to learn more about this topic, come check out the UWSP Fire Crew. UWSP Fire Crew meetings will be held Thurs. at 6pm TNR 170. We have several guest speakers lined up for this semester, and Wisconsin's spring wildfire season is approaching quickly, so come get involved! Can't make it to our meetings? Sustainable Agriculture in Communities Society

Meetings are Mondays at 6pm in TNR 354. If you have a passion for Reptiles and Amphibians this is the place to be! Come and learn hands on care, handling, identifying and interesting facts about native and non-native herpetiles. The Herpetology Society has many speakers and field trips planned so come and join the fun.

Waste Management Society meets every other Tuesday at 5:30pm, TNR 262.

WI Camps

Renewable Energy Summit
The fifth annual Wisconsin Renewable Energy Summit will be held in Milwaukee, WI on Mar. 12-14, 2008 at the Midwest Airlines Center. The Summit, titled Green Jobs – Growing Wisconsin’s Economy, will focus on the role that renewable energy, such as wind power, solar energy, geothermal, green buildings and bio-energy technologies, will play in supporting Wisconsin’s economic well being. Growth of renewable energy businesses will create new “green collar” jobs in Wisconsin. Those jobs include: manufacturers, installers, consultants, engineers, and associated professions. Introduction to Wolves
This wolf workshop will provide the latest information about the timber wolf in Wisconsin. Participants will learn about wolf ecology and society, pack structure, predator-prey relationship, and about the past, present, and future of the wolf, including the myths and misunderstandings. Weather and time permitting, some tracking may be done so don’t forget to bring your boots.

Fly Tying & Trout Stream Entomology
This favorite workshop will introduce you to: basic fly tying techniques, tools and materials, trout stream invertebrates, stream ecology, resource ethics, and theories on hatch matching and fly presentation. You’ll have loads of fun learning to tie common, effective fly patterns for trout at a fraction of the cost!

Are you interested in getting a Commercial Pesticide Applicator ' s License?
This spring we are offering a course NR 405 (Section 2) Vegetation Management that will help you do just that. This course is a one credit course offered on Mondays from 5-6pm. The course will function both as a tutorial for the Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License exam as well as a general overview course in vegetation management. A Saturday field trip will highlight field application techniques including use of application equipment, application safety and instruction on equipment calibration. The course will finish up with the applicator's exam. A Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License is an awesome addition to a resume.

NR 405 (Section 2) Vegetation Management will be offered this coming spring semester. Please feel free to contact Professors Mike Demchik, John DuPlissis and Les Werner with any questions that you might have about this course or your advisor to see how it fits into your degree program.

WI Waterfowl Hunters Conference

Bring applications back to TNR 180. Applications are being accepted for scholarships to attend the WI Waterfowl Hunters Conference. WWH will provide funds for 20 students to attend their annual conference for FREE! The conference will be held on Feb. 29 - Mar. 1 at the County Springs Hotel in Stevens Point. Students will be asked to help with set up and activities during the conference. This is a great opportunity to interact with dedicated waterfowl hunters from around the state! Students will be provided with access to all conference sessions, Fri. night "Duck Hunters Party" and lunch on Sat. To register pick up a form in CNR 180 and return it to the Student Success Center (TNR 180) by Fri, Feb. 22.
