There will be a European Environmental Studies Seminar Informational meeting
on Mon,, Oct. 23 at 7pm in 170 CNR.

Seniors!
If you are planning on graduating in the next two semesters, stop by the
Registration and Records Office in 101 SSC and fill out a graduation
application. This allows the registrar and your faculty advisor to review your
DPR and make sure you have met all the requirements to graduate. This step only
takes a minute but it can save you lots of trouble come graduation day!
Mathematics Placement Exam NEW
The next math placement exam will be on Tues. Oct. 17, 2006 at 1pm in
Room D228 of the Science building. Non-graphing calculators are okay and
ID is required.
Bake Sale and
Swap in the CNR! NEW
Come satisfy your
sweet tooth and help the community by coming to the Roots & Shoots Bake Sale and
Swap on Wed. Oct. 11 in the West Lobby of the CNR. Baked goods will be on sale
from 10-3. Don't have any cash? No problem! If you bring in an item to donate to
the Portage County Humane Society your treat will be on us! Help an animal in
need and fill your belly at the Roots & Shoots Bake Sale and Swap!
Items for donation include:
paper towels, powdered laundry detergent, bleach, color copy paper, Jungle Jake
cleaner, small plastic bags, kitten chow, dog treats, pig ear chews, cat and dog
toys, Kong toys, towels, blankets, Polaroid 600 film, kitchen trash bags, 39
gallon trash bags, dish washing liquid, milk replacer. Thanks for all your help!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
Winterims trips:
Costa Rica: Night watch for sea turtles (including leatherbacks!),
sea kayak mangroves, home stay in Venecia, visit butterfly gardens, canopy
walks, tour coffee and banana plantations, experience amazing biodiversity and
much more�.
Belize/Mexico: Snorkel in the second largest barrier reef in the
WORLD, tour ancient Mayan ruins and swim in canals dug by Mayans in 300 A.D.,
visit a jaguar preserve, a bat cave with over 10 million bats, visit a biosphere
reserve and eco-tourist sites and much more�..
Costa Rica has only three spaces open and Belize/Mexico only one!
Reserve your spot today by applying in the Office of International
Programs (IP) (CCC 108). Absolute application deadline is November 1 but if you
need a passport or financial help, apply now. These trips are a great
opportunity to grow personally, explore and experience the breathtaking
biodiversity of these hospitable countries. If you have any questions, would
like to see slides/photographs, or need an application visit Bobbi Kubish in CNR
174 or the Office of IP in CCC 108.
Costa Rica and
Mexico/Belize Combo Information Session
Both trips will be briefed and application procedures discussed. This is for
anyone who is interested in going this winterim but may have missed the first
set of sessions. It will be Mon., Oct. 9, 6-7 pm, in CNR 120.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Fisheries Society
All
Fisheries Society meetings will be in CNR 122 on Wed.'s at 5:30pm. Up coming
events include: Tim Goeman of the Minnesota DNR will be recruiting employees on
Oct. 11, Alumni Banquette on Oct. 20 and the Wisconsin River Survey, Oct.
20-22. Everyone is welcome.
University Sustainability Committee NEW
Come to our meeting Wed. Oct. 11 at 4pm in CNR 252 to help brainstorm
and get involved with sustainable initiatives for UWSP. The University
Sustainability Committee is a committee appointed by the chancellor open to all
faculty and students.
Women in Natural Resources
(WiNR)
Join
WiNR and the Izaac Walton League in trap shooting on Tues. Oct. 10 at 4:30pm.
Meet in the West Lobby of the CNR. No prior experience necessary. This is a
great way to try trap shooting in a safe and friendly environment. $5/person to
cover the cost of shells and clays. Snacks will be provided. Please note the
date change from Oct. 2 to Oct. 10.
There will be a WiNR meeting Mon., Oct. 16 in CNR 320 at 6pm. Come listen to
people talk about there international experiences! Some snacks will be provided!
Undergraduate Research Planning Committee
Come to our meeting Mon. Oct. 9 at 6pm in CNR 320. Learn how you can get
involved with undergraduate research, get funding, and be part of the
Undergraduate Research Planning Committee. Free pizza will be provided! Contact

Sustainable
Agriculture in Communities Society
We have
a ton of apples for making apple sauce and cider this weekend (Oct. 7-8) and we
will also be building a hoophouse. Please come if you are interested in
learning about these things. Around Oct. 15 we will be planting garlic and
setting up compost piles in our hoophouse to generate some heat. If you like
cooking or eating then get in on the harvest party planning. Our meetings are
Tues. nights at 7:00pm in CPS 116 so check us out.
Soil and Water
Conservation Society
It's time you stop treating your soil like dirt. Come join the Soil and
Water Conservation Society on Thursdays at 5:30pm in CNR 255 and participate in
exciting activities including college days for kids, soil judging, soil
grinding, and professional speakers.
Waste Management
Society Meeting NEW
We have
narrowed down our conference schedule for the fall. Come find out where we are
going and how you can join in. These are great opportunities to connect with
professional and potential employers down the road. We'll see you at 5:30pm on
Tues. Oct. 10 in CNR 271. We'll bring the pizza!

A Call For Outdoor Writers and
Student Stories
The Pointer is looking to include more student
stories to the Outdoors section of the student paper. They are particularly
looking for someone to submit a brief, local weekly or monthly fishing report.
If you are an avid hunter, hiker, camper or simply enjoy the
outdoors then submit your ideas and interests to Anne Frie at
afrie140@uwsp.edu. It is a great chance
to get your name published!
Fall Semester Resume Workshops
Resume workshops focused towards students with majors in the sciences
will be offered 7-9pm in #A201 Science Building by Mike Pagel from UWSP Career
Services on the following dates:
Wed., Sept. 27
Tues., Oct. 17
Mon., Oct. 23
Thurs., Nov. 2
Wed., Nov. 29
All sessions are identical in content, so students only need to attend
one session. The information obtained from one of these sessions will enable you
to write a rough draft of your resume, after which you may make appointments to
refine it. Participants should be prepared to take notes. Students graduating in
Dec. '06 are encouraged to attend a session as soon as possible. Students
graduating in May '07 are encouraged to attend a session by the end of this
semester. All continuing students and faculty are welcome to attend. Contact

Wildlife Student Hunter Awareness Class
Sign up for NR 405/605, Wildlife Hunter Awareness, a one credit class.
This class will teach students who have NOT hunted before, about the history,
ethics, conservation, and passion of hunters and hunting while at the McGraw
Wildlife Foundation property in Dundee, Illinois. Two sections are available,
either Oct. 5-8 or Oct. 26-29. Space is limited. See Dr. Lueck in CNR 245 or

and gain excellent contacts and references? If so, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is
looking for volunteers to take kids hunting, fishing, or just spend time

Volunteer Opportunity
The Humane Society of Portage County shelter is looking for volunteers
to assist with the opening of their brand new building. People are needed to
help guide visitors through the new facility, socialize with cats, walk dogs,
and educate visitors and the public about everything from how the shelter
benefits the community to pet care and dog bite prevention. Please contact

Wisconsin Urban Forestry Education Center, gardening expert Melinda Myers will
