Seniors!
If you are planning on graduating in the next two semesters, stop by the
Registration and Records Office in 101 SSC and fill out a graduation
application. This allows the registrar and your faculty advisor to review your
DPR and make sure you have met all the requirements to graduate. This step only
takes a minute but it can save you lots of trouble come graduation day!
Mathematics Placement Exam NEW
The next math placement exam will be on Tues. Oct. 17, 2006 at 1pm in
Room D228 of the Science building. Non-graphing calculators are okay and
ID is required.

Pre-Registration NEW
If you are interested in taking Geography 279 or 476 next
semester or winterim be sure to pre-register for these courses. Pre-registration
will begin Oct. 23 and run through Nov. 2. Stop by the Geography/Geology
Department Office (Science D332) during normal business hours and make sure you
know the section number you want to take because it must be specified during
pre-registration.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
Winterims trips:
Costa Rica: Night watch for sea turtles (including leatherbacks!),
sea kayak mangroves, home stay in Venecia, visit butterfly gardens, canopy

Costa Rica has only three spaces open and Belize/Mexico only one!
Reserve your spot today by applying in the Office of International
Programs (IP) (CCC 108). Absolute application deadline is November 1 but if you
need a passport or financial help, apply now. These trips are a great
opportunity to grow personally, explore and experience the breathtaking
biodiversity of these hospitable countries. If you have any questions, would

Fisheries Society
Fisheries Society meeting are in CNR 122 on Wednesdays at 5:30pm. Up coming
events: Trout Unlimited Habitat Restoration on the Tomorrow River on Oct. 14,
Alumni Banquette Oct. 20, and Wisconsin River Survey Oct. 20-22. Everyone is
welcome.
University Sustainability Committee NEW
Come to our meeting Wed. Oct. 11 at 4pm in CNR 252 to help brainstorm
and get involved with sustainable initiatives for UWSP. The University
Sustainability Committee is a committee appointed by the chancellor open to all
faculty and students.
Women in Natural Resources
(WiNR)
The next
meeting is Mon. Oct 16
at 6pm in CNR 320. Come hear other women talk about their international
experiences. Rachel Koehler will be speaking about her trip to China through the
GEM program. There will also be
someone talking about Africa,
and Kendra will talk about her summer in Europe. Come for a good time and a few
snacks. You can also order your T-shirts and pay dues and even sign up for new
membership!
Sat. Oct. 21,
Volunteer at Northwood�s Wildlife Center in Minocqua, WI. It is a great time,
and an AWESOME HOT lunch is provided. Contact Kendra at ksawy180@uwsp.edu if
interested in going also inform her if you can drive. Leave around 8am and
return in the evening between 5 and 6pm.
Sustainable
Agriculture in Communities Society
What's
up conservationists? Have you seen the new hoophouse that was built in the
campus garden? No? Well go see it, it's amazing! We will be planting some stuff
in there soon, including delicious spinach! We will also be planting garlic and
planning for a harvest dinner to celebrate our growing season and all that we
have accomplished as well as giving thanks for all the help and support we have
received. Come by one of our meetings on Tues. at 7pm in CPS 116.
Soil and Water
Conservation Society
It's time you stop treating your soil like dirt. Come join the Soil and
Water Conservation Society on Thursdays at 5:30pm in CNR 255 and participate in
exciting activities including college days for kids, soil judging, soil
grinding, and professional speakers.

Meetings are every Thurs. at 6pm in CNR 170. Thurs. Oct. 19 Dan Cottrell, a
smoke jumper from Missoula, Montana will be at the meeting to give a

A Call For Outdoor Writers and
Student Stories
The Pointer is looking to include more student
stories to the Outdoors section of the student paper. They are particularly
looking for someone to submit a brief, local weekly or monthly fishing report.
If you are an avid hunter, hiker, camper or simply enjoy the
outdoors then submit your ideas and interests to Anne Frie at
afrie140@uwsp.edu. It is a great chance
to get your name published!
Fall Semester Resume Workshops
Resume workshops focused towards students with majors in the sciences
will be offered 7-9pm in #A201 Science Building by Mike Pagel from UWSP Career
Services on the following dates:
Wed., Sept. 27
Tues., Oct. 17
Mon., Oct. 23
Thurs., Nov. 2
Wed., Nov. 29
All sessions are identical in content, so students only need to attend
one session. The information obtained from one of these sessions will enable you
to write a rough draft of your resume, after which you may make appointments to
refine it. Participants should be prepared to take notes. Students graduating in
Dec. '06 are encouraged to attend a session as soon as possible. Students
graduating in May '07 are encouraged to attend a session by the end of this
semester. All continuing students and faculty are welcome to attend. Contact

Student Hunter Awareness Class
Need just one more upper level
credit? Sign up for NR 405/605, Wildlife Hunter Awareness. This important, fun
1-credit class will teach students who have NOT hunted before, about the
history, ethics, conservation, and passion of hunters and hunting while at the
McGraw Wildlife Foundation property in Dundee, Illinois. This meets Oct. 26-29.

Volunteer Opportunity
The Humane Society of Portage County shelter is looking for volunteers
to assist with the opening of their brand new building. People are needed to
help guide visitors through the new facility, socialize with cats, walk dogs,
and educate visitors and the public about everything from how the shelter
benefits the community to pet care and dog bite prevention. Please contact

Small Space Garden Seminar
If you're interested in packing a
lot of garden into a small space or creating an intimate garden within a large
lot, attend Small Space Gardens, a presentation at Mid-State
Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids on Sat. Oct. 21. Brought to you by the
Wisconsin Urban Forestry Education Center, gardening expert Melinda Myers will
be speaking from 10am to Noon. The fee is $15 and the registration

Treehaven Workshops NEW
Snowshoe Weaving
Nov. 10-12, 2006
Experience the
traditional art of snowshoe weaving. Treehaven�s snowshoe weaving workshop is
woven with a friendly atmosphere, excellent instruction, a historical look at
snowshoeing and a hands-on chance to weave your own masterpiece. Each
participant will take home one pair of beautiful, functional snowshoes; the
Ojibwa, an elongated trail shoe coming to a point at each end, the Bear Paw, a
shortened oval design, or the Alaskan, an elongated trail shoe coming to a point
at the tail with a rounded toe. Shoes will be completed with the exception of
varnishing. Price
of the full package is $240 which includes 5 meals, snacks, lodging,
instruction, & kit. The commuter package is $175 which includes three meals,
snacks, instruction, & kit.
Workshop starts Fri. at 7pm and goes thru Sun. lunch.

size is limited, so register early!
Snowshoe Furniture & Accessory Weaving
Nov. 11, 2006
Take a day to learn the
ancient weaving pattern and knot used in traditional snowshoe making to create
snowshoe-style furniture. Rockers and tables with a warm amber glow add a cozy
grace to your home, cabin, or business. Furniture can be assembled at Treehaven.
Some choose to assemble the Rocking Chair at home (especially if you drive a
smaller car). �Quickie Accessory Kits� will be available for purchase at
Treehaven. Treehaven�s snowshoe classes are known for providing an enjoyable,
comfortable, casual, and friendly atmosphere. Chris Johnson, Treehaven�s
Environmental Educator, provides enthusiasm, patience, and experience. She works
well with people of all weaving abilities and will gladly provide the assistance
you need as you accomplish the mastery of this art. Level of difficulty has
nothing to do with size of the furniture. Cost will range from $145 to $220
depending on project choice. Registration price includes cost of kit and
materials except varnish, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and instruction. Class
begins at 9am and will run until you are done, or 7pm
Class size is limited, so register early!

Attention Deer Hunters NEW
There is a group of students conducting liver fluke research on whitetail deer
and are asking for your help. They are looking for the livers of harvested deer.
Livers from deer of all ages and gender and from all different areas are
encouraged. If you are interested and harvest a deer, put the liver in a 2
gallon zip lock bag or plastic bag (double bagged would be appreciated), and
donate them fresh or frozen. For every liver given you will be put into a
drawing to win a "4x4 Block Portable Archery Target" and two packs of the new
"Rage Expandable Broadheads". To arrange pick-up of your deer liver,
