Courses Being Offered

Forestry 499 (section 2)
Private Forest Management will be offered this coming spring
semester. Non-industrial private forest landowners own 59 percent of America
woodlands and 57 percent of Wisconsin�s woodlands. They account for a majority
of the wood that is harvested which supply America�s forest products industry.
This course is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary for
agency, industry, and private enterprise foresters to work with and develop
forest stewardship management plans for family forest landowners. This course
will provide you with an introduction to Wisconsin�s Managed Forest Law and
Certified Plan Writer curriculum as well as the profession of consulting
forestry in Wisconsin.
NRES 405 (section
2) Vegetation Management. This course will introduce students to the major
concepts of the control of unwanted vegetation by mechanical means, cultural
practices and the use of herbicides. The purpose of this course is to introduce
students to the types of chemicals, their modes of action, application and
calibration techniques and the laws that regulate the use and storage of
pesticides commonly used to manage vegetation in Lake States
region. Additionally, the course content will prepare students to take the exams
that are required to obtain a Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicators License
for Forestry and Turf and Landscape.
The course objectives are to teach students to�
1. Become familiar with basic weed, insect and disease ecology
2. Be familiar with Chemical and non-chemical methods of control
3. Understand the various modes of action, formulations and methods of
application
4. Understand the pesticide label
We are requiring at
least one of the following courses: Forestry 327 (Forest Protection), Forestry
424 (Forest Pathology), or Forestry 426 (Forest Entomology) as prerequisites for
this course or students can participate by instructor permission. Please contact
Professors Demchik, Werner, or DuPlissis if you have any questions or want
further information about the course.

490 Winterim and Spring

Winterim:
If you really need to get into Winterim NRES 490 that is closed � only a
small number of seats are reserved that can be added to each lab. Those few
seats are assigned on the basis of greatest need (e.g. most significant
problems/conflicts � such as hard conflicts where the student must take courses
off campus in the following (final) semester tends to be a very high priority �
students only needing the NR 490 course to graduate is also one of the highest
priority concerns, assuming students are on schedule, could not have taken the
course earlier and were not allowed to register early enough to take the course.
Also priority would be given to other hard conflicts where there are no
alternatives to avoid the problem. If you believe you have a good case, send a
DETAILED email to Dr. Govett at rgovett@uwsp.edu ASAP that specifically details
your circumstance � be sure your email includes your ID# and if you are sending
it from other than campus email, be sure to include your proper name. The spare
seats are assigned very shortly after seniors are scheduled to register �
usually about 5 or 6 days after the first day of registration.
Spring: If you really
need to get into a Spring Semester NRES 490 lab that is closed, go to the CNR
Student Success Center ASAP and get your name on the waiting list � indicate ALL
sections that could possibly work for you and indicate when you anticipate
graduating. (Do it quickly and be optimistic - for many semesters we have been
able to accommodate all students who do this who really need the course at that
time who get their name on the list in a timely fashion.) Be honest with
information you provide � when necessary we do check your course schedule and
progress. It is important that you get your name on the list IMMEDIATELY � some
seats are held open in each section for selective assignment to students with
conflicts who might not get into the section they need � the spare seats are
assigned very shortly after seniors are scheduled to register � usually about 5
or 6 days after the first day of registration.

Offered Next Semester

Introduction to effects of environmental contaminants on aquatic
and terrestrial organisms, will be offered next semester.
No math or chemistry
prerequisites are required. The class will be two hours lecture and one

The PR listed before many upper level CNR courses means acceptance to
the CNR and are not true permission required. If you are already accepted to the
CNR, you do not need any additional permissions to register for these classes.
If you are not admitted to the CNR, you will need permission from the instructor
of the class before registering.
True permission required courses include: Internships and Independent
Study/Special Work - If you want to register for these classes, you must get
electronic permission from a faculty member.

International Photo Contest:
Have you traveled internationally and taken that perfect photo? Then it is time
to dust them off and enter one in the CNR�s International Photo Contest!
There are two categories: 1. Environment and Nature 2. People and
Culture. Students and CNR Faculty/Staff are eligible to apply and will be
judged separately.
CNR Student Winners:
A 1st place winner and runner-up within each category will be
announced in December. Prizes: 1st place = $50 in each category,
Runner-up = $25 in each category. Photos may also be used by the CNR for
publicity on websites, brochures, etc...
CNR Faculty/Staff Winners:
The satisfaction of knowing you take a great picture! Photos displayed in CNR
and possible use in future promotional items (with name recognition).
Contest rules:
Photos must be jpeg files, a minimum of 500kb, and general proportion of 5�x7�.

Phi Kappa
Phi Honor Society Study Abroad Scholarships:
Have you
wanted to travel internationally? Are you looking for extra money to do so? Do
you have between 30 and 90 credit hours earned, and a GPA of at least 3.5? If
you answered yes to these questions then be sure to check out the Study Abroad
Grant (due Feb. 17, 2006). Annually, fifty $1,000 grants are awarded
by Phi Kappa Phi and last year three UWSP students won. You DO NOT have to be a
member to apply but read their website for qualifications carefully. One
condition is that the study abroad program must be taken between May 1, 2007 and
June 30, 2008 (European Seminar would apply!). Check out the Phi Kappa Phi

Attention Forestry Majors
Are you interested in comparing harvesting in the United States with harvesting
systems in Germany? If so, why not consider a harvesting system field course at
the University of Freiburg, Germany (approximate dates of Jan. 8-12, 2007)? For
those of you who will be taking Forestry 329 with Dr. Harms during one of the
next two semesters (Spring or Fall 07), the experience can be used towards a
class assignment. This is a great
opportunity to get international experience at relatively low cost. Contact

Environmental Educators and Naturalist Association (EENA)

for Earth Week starting now! We will also be talking about our up coming holiday
bake sale taking place Wed. Dec. 6 amongst other things! Everyone is welcome!

Hey CNR Students! EVERY WEEK SGA votes on
legislation that directly affects you as students! Let your CNR Senators know
how YOU feel and what YOU want. Check out our new board in the first floor,
south hallway of the CNR (right by the West Lobby). Share your thoughts and
opinions on the latest legislation and take time to express any concerns you
have for UWSP. We are here to represent you! Stop by and have your voice heard!

starting up soon with the colder weather coming, so come check it out!
Fight Mercury Pollution!
Learning
about pollution to our world's waterways in class and want to know how take an
active role in fighting this pollution? Come to a meeting of the new student
organization Wavemakers! We are working on a campaign targeting the mercury
pollution being produced at the chlorine plant in Port Edwards. Actively take
part in influencing the plant to upgrade to environmentally friendly technology.
To learn more about the plant and the campaign come to a Wavemakers meeting
every Wed. at 6pm in Nelson 217. ALL ARE WELCOME. Don't wait to graduate to take
a stand, you can make a difference now!

Agriculture in Communities Society
We will be
planning for our garden in the spring, so stop by our meetings to voice your
ideas. Be on the lookout for our bake sales where you can get some warm apple

Fall Semester Resume Workshops
Resume workshops focused towards students with majors in the sciences
will be offered 7-9pm in #A201 Science Building by Mike Pagel from UWSP Career

All sessions are identical in content, so students only need to attend
one session. The information obtained from one of these sessions will enable you
to write a rough draft of your resume, after which you may make appointments to

Dec. '06 are encouraged to attend a session as soon as possible. Students
graduating in May '07 are encouraged to attend a session by the end of this

Camps State-wide Student Workshop

Wisconsin Camps Student Workshop is an opportunity for students studying Youth
Programming and Camp Management or Environmental Education and any students that
have worked for a summer camp or youth agency. Students will have a chance to

Attention Deer Hunters
There is a group of students conducting liver fluke research on whitetail deer
and are asking for your help. They are looking for the livers of harvested deer.
Livers from deer of all ages and gender and from all different areas are
encouraged. If you are interested and harvest a deer, put the liver in a 2
gallon zip lock bag or plastic bag (double bagged would be appreciated), and
donate them fresh or frozen. For every liver given you will be put into a
drawing to win a "4x4 Block Portable Archery Target" and two packs of the new
"Rage Expandable Broadheads". To arrange pick-up of your deer liver,

Tutors Needed
Kappa Delta Phi, the School of Education Honor Society, works with Pacelli High
School to set up weekly university tutors for students who request them. Tutors
are needed to help students in all different areas of academics, but especially
Ecology, Biology, and Physical Science.
The tutors are matched one to one, so the UWSP student will work with the same
high school student each time. This program has be in operation for several
years, and it has been quite a success. The times for tutoring are during the
regular Pacelli school day (7:30am-3:30pm) and the time would be set up to best
meet the university students schedule.

The Three Lakes Fish and Wildlife Improvement Association is looking for
two individuals to age deer on the opening weekend of gun season (Nov. 18-19).
The two individuals will be aging deer at the BP station in Three Lakes.
Room and board at the Oneida Village will be provided as well as possible
compensation for time worked.
