Biology 378 - Mammalogy
There will be a section of Bio 378 offered this summer. Half of the class will be taught at Pigeon Lake Field Station and half on campus. The course will cost about $300 extra to pay for room and board at Pigeon Lake, and there is room for about 17 students. If you have any questions contact Dr. Chris Yahnke.

 CWES Plant List

Geography 353 Online Summer Course
Geography 353 Physical Climatology and Meteorology will be offered online this summer. Course requirements are:

1. Required textbook and online readings
2. Four Short answer assignments covering the textbook/online reading.
3. Four multiple-choice online exams.

Students can work at their own pace but must have all requirements completed by the end of the term. Though G101 is listed as a prerequisite, I will waive it and give permission for CNR students to take it.

Leave-No-Trace (LNT) Trainer / Backpacking
 Learn LNT wilderness ethics by way of practical application on an overnight backpacking/camping adventure and become an LNT Trainer. Participants will be able to teach others about LNT principals.

Under the Canopy: Wild Plants for Survival, Food, & Medicine
Under the Canopy Part I. Plant walk and demonstration. Here's a respectful and relaxing introduction to our good plant neighbors who dwell below and beyond the canopy of the trees. We'll learn how to identify and selection of fascinating and useful herbaceous and woody plants and shrubs.

Mushrooming in the Northwoods: An introduction
Is it a mushroom or a toadstool?  Ben Meadows Natural Resources Scholarships
The Ben Meadows Company announces two scholarships administered through the Society of American Foresters (SAF) for college students enrolled in natural resources programs. The scholarships, one for academic achievement and one based on leadership, are each worth $2,500. Students must be entering their junior or senior years and enrolled full time in a Natural Resource curriculum at the baccalaureate level. Applications are due by June 30, 2007. Eligible students are encouraged to apply. Instructions, complete requirements, and the application form can be found on the Ben Meadows website.

Iowa DNR Wetland Monitoring Positions
The Iowa DNR Watershed Monitoring and Assessment Section is seeking two summer wetland monitoring assistants. Assistants will work with wetland monitoring biologists to identify, measure, collect, and record various types of biological, chemical and physical data from wetlands and shallow lakes located in north central/west Iowa. The objectives of this project are to assess the ecological condition of wetlands related to statewide initiatives to improve water quality. Applicants must have a good understanding of basic wetland ecology, outdoor skills, be willing to work long hours in the field under all types of weather conditions, and be able to perform moderate physical work such as carrying sampling equipment while walking through marshy areas, loading/unloading canoes, etc. Pay will be a stipend of $1500/ month and housing will be provided. Peatland Bird Survey Technician
UW Stevens Point is seeking 3 summer field technicians to assist a graduate student with research on passerine bird communities of peatlands in Wisconsin.  Duties will include conducting bird point counts and sampling vegetation at study sites statewide. Desirable applicants must have experience with point count surveys and eastern bird identification (both audio and visual). GPS navigation, topographic map reading skills, and ability to use a compass also are necessary. Experience identifying wetland and/or peatland vegetation and forest measurement techniques are a plus. Must be able to travel extensively and work alone in early mornings and under rigorous field conditions.  Interns would be paid $12/hr and would work throughout Wisconsin from mid-May through July 15. State Park Volunteer Opportunity
We are looking for volunteers to work on displays in our office nature center at Buckhorn and for giving presentations or hikes at Buckhorn and Roche-A-Cri this summer. The parks are located in Necedah and Friendship. At Buckhorn we have a new amphitheater near the lake with a sound system, stage, and plenty of seating. Both parks have prairie restoration areas with trails through them. Daytime or evening programs on wildlife, invasive species, forestry, wildflowers, and other topics can be presented. This is a great opportunity for students to gain experience in a park setting. We have many resources available at the parks for use in presentations too. Dates and times are flexible, most programs are held on weekends when the campsites are filled.
