Tutoring for Biology and NR Classes

Lost and Found
A cream 66 Degrees North fleece was lost in CNR 366 on Mon. Feb. 12 between 2-3pm. The fleece has black stripes on the sides and sleeves. It was from Iceland and has sentimental value to the owner. If you have any information please contact Jeremy Heise jheis837@uwsp.edu.

CNR International Student Club?
Would you like to meet international students in the CNR? Or other like-minded individuals who care about natural resources and want to travel abroad? Would you be interested in participating in a monthly CNR International Student Club? If so, please contact Bobbi Kubish via email (bkubish@uwsp.edu) so she can determine student interest in this type of experience. Potential activities would be potlucks, slideshows/gatherings to learn about UWSP foreign student countries and student travels abroad, game nights, mentorships, field trips, etc... This would be open to both foreign and US students. Let me know your thoughts by March 15!

Interested in visiting Costa Rica or Mexico/Belize? How about a semester in New Zealand with CNR Prof. Dr. Rick Wilke? Now is the time to sign up for the 2007-08 winterims and Fall 08 semester abroads! If you have any questions, would like to look at photographs, see past itineraries, etc�please contact Bobbi Kubish in CNR 174. Students who sign up for winterims before March 15 are eligible to apply for the IPSE scholarship (see below). Also see information about the Gilman International Scholarship below for another funding opportunity for all study abroad programs during the 07-08 academic year (i.e. Winterims, New Zealand, Australia, etc�).

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK TO TURN IN the Study Abroad Scholarships
Available to ALL UWSP students. Apply today if you are planning to travel summer, fall or winterim 2007 (i.e. European Seminar, Costa Rica or Mexico/Belize winterim)! IPSE (International Programs Scholarship Endowment) scholarships are available for all programs beginning in the summer of 2007.  These will be given to UWSP students based on several factors, but merit, rather than need, is a hallmark for these scholarships.  UWSP continuing students are strongly encouraged to apply. Deadline for all 2007 programs is Mar. 15, 2007 --  ACT NOW.  Details and application (http://www.uwsp.edu/studyabroad/). Gilman International Travel Scholarships Available � Apply Today!
The Gilman International Scholarship is now accepting applications from students participating in study abroad programs during Fall 2007/ Academic Year 2007-2008. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all U.S. undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

• The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad. 
• The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's institution of higher education in the U.S.
• The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country.
• The applicant is studying abroad in a country not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.
• The applicant is studying on a program that begins between July 15, 2007 and October 15, 2007. The Fall cycle encompasses fall semester, quarter, and academic year programs. January term applicants should apply during the Spring 2008 cycle.

There has never been a better time to apply. More than 800 scholarship will be awarded to students during the 2007-2008 academic year. Award recipients will receive up to $5,000.

American Water Resources Association (AWRA)

Hunter Education for Women and Girls
The Wisconsin Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is offering a spring hunter education certification class in the College of Natural Resources, Apr. 3-May 8. The 6-week course will meet once a week from 5:30-8:30pm. Participants will learn firearm safety and shooting techniques, archery, hunter ethics, and more. Successful completion of the class earns Wisconsin DNR certification required to purchase a hunting license in the state. This is an important topic for anyone pursing a degree in natural resources. A ten dollar fee is required to hold your place in the class. For a course syllabus and registration information, contact Peggy Farrell, pfarrell@uwsp.edu. Register early as space is limited.

Red-shouldered Hawk Workshop for Volunteers

North Woods Survival Experience
Option I: North Woods Survival Craft
Learn the craft and knowledge needed to enjoy an extended North Woods "survival" experience. You'll learn how to meet your body's requirements in the bush, how to build shelter, make a bow drill kit and friction fire, knots, hitches, and more.

Now, we take to the woods and put our skills to the test! We'll practice gadget less navigation as we move through the wilderness with our homemade packs. We'll build our camp, light our fire, respectfully harvest gifts of the plants, trees, and wildlife for food, craft, comfort, and first aid.

Leave-No-Trace (LNT) Trainer / Backpacking
Learn LNT wilderness ethics by way of practical application on an overnight backpacking/camping adventure and become an LNT Trainer. Participants will be able to teach others about LNT principals.

Under the Canopy: Wild Plants for Survival, Food, & Medicine
Under the Canopy Part I. Plant walk and demonstration. Here's a respectful and relaxing introduction to our good plant neighbors who dwell below and beyond the canopy of the trees. We'll learn how to identify and selection of fascinating and useful herbaceous and woody plants and shrubs.

There is a "new" search engine at www.goodsearch.com that allows individuals to designate a nonprofit institution to which approximately a penny will be donated each time you perform a search. This search engine is based on Yahoo. The Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation is now listed as an "approved" organization. Please consider giving this search engine a try. Just go to www.goodsearch.com type "Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation" into the "Who Do You GoodSearch For?" box. Click the "verify" button and then type your search terms in the search box as usual. Obviously there is no obligation for you to use this search engine and obviously you could choose an organization other than the Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation if you desired. Choosing the Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation will enable the WEEF to provide concrete data regarding public support for the Foundation's goal of "supporting environmental education in all segments of society" (including the work of the CNR). Please consider making others aware of this opportunity to not only raise funds for EE, but to demonstrate the EE community's strength in numbers. The Ben Meadows Company announces two scholarships administered through the Society of American Foresters (SAF) for college students enrolled in natural resources programs. The scholarships, one for academic achievement and one based on leadership, are each worth $2,500. Students must be entering their junior or senior years and enrolled full time in a Natural Resource curriculum at the baccalaureate level. Applications are due by June 30, 2007. Iowa DNR Wetland Monitoring Positions
The Iowa DNR Watershed Monitoring and Assessment Section is seeking two summer wetland monitoring assistants. Assistants will work with wetland monitoring biologists to identify, measure, collect, and record various types of biological, chemical and physical data from wetlands and shallow lakes located in north central/west Iowa. The objectives of this project are to assess the ecological condition of wetlands related to statewide initiatives to improve water quality. Applicants must have a good understanding of basic wetland ecology, outdoor skills, be willing to work long hours in the field under all types of weather conditions, and be able to perform moderate physical work such as carrying sampling equipment while walking through marshy areas, loading/unloading canoes, etc. Pay will be a stipend of $1500/ month and housing will be provided. Peatland Bird Survey Technician
UW Stevens Point is seeking 3 summer field technicians to assist a graduate student with research on passerine bird communities of peatlands in Wisconsin.  Duties will include conducting bird point counts and sampling vegetation at study sites statewide. Desirable applicants must have experience with point count surveys and eastern bird identification (both audio and visual). GPS navigation, topographic map reading skills, and ability to use a compass also are necessary. Experience identifying wetland and/or peatland vegetation and forest measurement techniques are a plus. Must be able to travel extensively and work alone in early mornings and under rigorous field conditions.  Interns would be paid $12/hr and would work throughout Wisconsin from mid-May through July 15. Jefferson County Conservation Board is looking for a park ranger intern to assist in the maintenance of nine county parks. Duties include collection of camping fees, monitoring shelter and cabin rentals, enforcement of park rules and regulations, general park maintenance, assist Naturalist in environmental education programs, and assist in forestry and vegetation management and trail construction.
