Student Success Center Hours
Sue's walk-in hours will be Mon. and Wed. from 1-2:30pm. Quick questions only. CNR Student Success Center (CNR 180) is open Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30pm.

Tutoring for Biology and NR Classes
Biology and Natural Resource class tutoring is going on right now. The cost is only $10 for the semester and you can sign up for as many tutoring groups as you like. To find out more information or to sign up, go to Room 018 in the basement of the LRC or click on the title to view the website.

Treehaven Registration

All students going to Treehaven this summer are authorized to register for summer courses. This will take place during your online scheduled appointment to register for fall classes. Don't forget that you need to pay your $100 fee for summer and fall before you can register. Deadline for Treehaven registration is Apr. 31.
!Last Math Placement Exam
There is only one math placement exam remaining, it is onMon, Apr. 30. Just show up with a non-graphing calculator, a picture ID, and SS#. The test is in A201SCI.

Earth Week!
NEW
Earth Week will be all this week starting on Sun, Apr. 22 with a documentary about Gaylord Nelson, the founder of earth day, in CNR 170 at 7pm and ending with Eco-Fair next Fri, Apr. 27. Other events include speakers Doug LaFollette and Mike Dombeck on Mon. and Tues. nights. Come and join the celebration for our earth!

Treehaven Session Lists

Biology 378 - Mammalogy
There will be a section of Bio 378 offered this summer. Half of the class will be taught at Pigeon Lake Field Station and half on campus. The course will cost about $300 extra to pay for room and board at Pigeon Lake, and there is room for about 17 students. If you have any questions contact Dr. Chris Yahnke.

CWES Plant List

Dr. Ernesto Caste�ada is is a professor at ITVO where he is a lecturer and researcher. He has served as head of the departments of Informatics and for Support for Teaching, and as Dean of the graduate program. Caste�ada is an  expert in sustainable agriculture, environmental management and rural development. He works with indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca in southeastern Mexico. Currently his focus is on sustainable production and food security for deeply impoverished communities.

Earth Week is the week of Apr. 22-27. Be on the lookout for flyers promoting all of the events and don't miss out on Eco-Fair. It is on Fri, Apr. 22 from 11am to 5pm on the east lawn of the CNR. EENA meetings are Tues. nights at 7pm in CNR 122. Check it out if you are interested in the environment, teaching, or just want to hang out.

Hey CNR Students! EVERY WEEK SGA votes on legislation that directly affects you as students! Let your CNR Senators know how YOU feel and what YOU want. Meetings are every Tues. at 5pm in CNR 240.  Upcoming events include a presentation on Apr. 26, 5pm, by Dr. Kraft to be aired on PBS, and Little Plover Appreciation Day on May 4, from 11am-3pm.

National Arbor Day is just around the corner. Are you going to plant a tree? In honor of Arbor Day, the Schmeeckle Reserve Browse Shop is offering 10% off all books related to trees. All field guides, identification books, and other tree books will be on sale from Mon, Apr. 23 through Sun, Apr. 29. Happy Arbor Day!

Schmeeckle Reserve 2007 Spring Candlelight Hike
The Candlelight Hike will feature a one-mile torch-lit trail through Schmeeckle Reserve. As always, free snacks and beverages will also be provided to the public. We will also be offering a new program this year, �Stories from the Past: Namesakes of Central Wisconsin�.  This fun family presentation will bring to life characters who share stories about the early days in the area. Visitors will meet George Stevens, Jean Baptiste Dubay, Ike Ferris, George Whiting, and other historic personalities who shaped central Wisconsin.
The hike will be on Sat, Apr. 21 from 7-10pm at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitors' Center with a special program from 7:30-8:30pm at the campfire ring.


Hunter Education for Women and Girls

The Wisconsin Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is offering a spring hunter education certification class in the College of Natural Resources, Apr. 3-May 8. The 6-week course will meet once a week from 5:30-8:30pm. Participants will learn firearm safety and shooting techniques, archery, hunter ethics, and more. Successful completion of the class earns Wisconsin DNR certification required to purchase a hunting license in the state. This is an important topic for anyone pursing a degree in natural resources. A ten dollar fee is required to hold your place in the class. For a course syllabus and registration information, contact Peggy Farrell, pfarrell@uwsp.eduRegister early as space is limited.

North Woods Survival Experience

Option I: North Woods Survival Craft
Learn the craft and knowledge needed to enjoy an extended North Woods "survival" experience. You'll learn how to meet your body's requirements in the bush, how to build shelter, make a bow drill kit and friction fire, knots, hitches, and more. 
WHEN: Friday 9am-5pm Sat, May 4-5, 2007 
INSTRUCTOR: Jason Faunce. 
FEE: $110 lunch Fri/Sat, dinner Fri, breakfast Sat, lodging Fri and instruction.

Option II: North Woods Overnighter - (Pre-requirement: North Wood Survival Craft)
Now, we take to the woods and put our skills to the test! We'll practice gadget less navigation as we move through the wilderness with our homemade packs. We'll build our camp, light our fire, respectfully harvest gifts of the plants, trees, and wildlife for food, craft, comfort, and first aid.

Leave-No-Trace (LNT) Trainer / Backpacking
Learn LNT wilderness ethics by way of practical application on an overnight backpacking/camping adventure and become an LNT Trainer. Participants will be able to teach others about LNT principals.

Under the Canopy: Wild Plants for Survival, Food, & Medicine
Under the Canopy Part I. Plant walk and demonstration. Here's a respectful and relaxing introduction to our good plant neighbors who dwell below and beyond the canopy of the trees. We'll learn how to identify and selection of fascinating and useful herbaceous and woody plants and shrubs.
WHEN:  Sat, 10am-3pm, June 16, or August 4, 2007

FEE: $35 includes instruction & lunch
NOTE: One undergraduate or graduate credit available if taken with Under the Canopy Part II.

Under the Canopy Part II. Making crafts, medicine, and food. We�ll do some harvesting for food, survival skills, crafting, and medicine making. At the least, you�ll leave with some medicinal tea, cordage, the start of a basket, an animal call, and food that you made yourself�but the possibilities are endless.

Ben Meadows Natural Resources Scholarships
The Ben Meadows Company announces two scholarships administered through the Society of American Foresters (SAF) for college students enrolled in natural resources programs. The scholarships, one for academic achievement and one based on leadership, are each worth $2,500. Students must be entering their junior or senior years and enrolled full time in a Natural Resource curriculum at the baccalaureate level. Applications are due by June 30, 2007. Eligible students are encouraged to apply. Instructions, complete requirements, and the application form can be found on the Ben Meadows website.

Iowa DNR Wetland Monitoring Positions

The Iowa DNR Watershed Monitoring and Assessment Section is seeking two summer wetland monitoring assistants. Assistants will work with wetland monitoring biologists to identify, measure, collect, and record various types of biological, chemical and physical data from wetlands and shallow lakes located in north central/west Iowa. The objectives of this project are to assess the ecological condition of wetlands related to statewide initiatives to improve water quality. Applicants must have a good understanding of basic wetland ecology, outdoor skills, be willing to work long hours in the field under all types of weather conditions, and be able to perform moderate physical work such as carrying sampling equipment while walking through marshy areas, loading/unloading canoes, etc. Pay will be a stipend of $1500/ month and housing will be provided. Three surveyors are needed from Apr. 1-May 11, 2007 to conduct morning transect surveys to detect migrant landbirds during spring migration near Yuma, Arizona. UW Stevens Point is seeking 3 summer field technicians to assist a graduate student with research on passerine bird communities of peatlands in Wisconsin.  Duties will include conducting bird point counts and sampling vegetation at study sites statewide. Desirable applicants must have experience with point count surveys and eastern bird identification (both audio and visual). GPS navigation, topographic map reading skills, and ability to use a compass also are necessary. Experience identifying wetland and/or peatland vegetation and forest measurement techniques are a plus. Must be able to travel extensively and work alone in early mornings and under rigorous field conditions.  Interns would be paid $12/hr and would work throughout Wisconsin from mid-May through July 15.
