| Training |
| Training at UWSP is taken very seriously. We
want all of our athletes to have the opportunity to swim at their desired potential. This
means very specific, race-oriented training. The coaching staff treats each athlete as an individual,
understanding that there are many different paths to success. More generally, the team separates
each day at practice into a sprint, mid-distance, and distance group, and even sometimes by stroke. We
work out every evening, Saturday mornings, and two-three mornings a week. Included in workouts are
dry land routines to build quickness and explosiveness. Weight training is not mandatory, but
is highly recommended, especially for sprinters. |

 |
| The season begins at the end of September, and goes either to mid-February or mid-March,
depending on if the athlete makes the national meet or not. The first month or two generally
are devoted to developing an aerobic base. By early December, UWSP heads down to the Wheaton
Invitational. Swimmers have the option for shaving and tapering for this meet. Most of our
national cuts are achieved here. After Wheaton, the focus returns to training, culminating on
our Hawaii trip. After returning, we start to focus on conference and
nationals, individualizing our taper plans. |
