Big Innings Key
Pointers' Sweep of Yellowjackets
UW-Stevens Point used a big inning in each game
to sweep a softball doubleheader from UW-Superior and extend its winning
streak to nine games on Sunday at McCarty Field.
The 5-2 and 7-5 wins give the Pointers their
best record after 22 games in school history at 19-3 overall and 4-0 in
the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Superior is 10-10
overall and 0-2 in the league.
UW-Stevens Point scored all five of its runs
in the opening game in the fourth inning. Trailing 1-0 entering the
frame, Korryn Brooks tied the game with a run-scoring single and Melissa
Boldt put her team ahead with a run-scoring hit. Chelsea McIlquham later
added a two-run single and then scored on a double by Mandy Jellish to
put the Pointers ahead 5-1.
The Yellowjackets rallied with an unearned run
in the sixth, but Pointers hurler Stephanie Anderson put them away in
order in the seventh to finish with a complete game five-hitter and six
strikeouts. UW-Stevens Point totaled 12 hits in the victory with eight
different players recording a hit.
The Pointers jumped on UW-Superior with four
runs in the second inning of the second game as Brooks led off the
inning with a triple and scored on a home run by Anderson. Pinch-runner
Alina Ziomek scored on an error and Jackie Berger followed with a
run-scoring single for a 4-0 lead.
Another RBI single from Berger put the
Pointers ahead 5-0 in the fifth and Jellish scored on an error later in
the inning for a six-run cushion. UW-Stevens Point needed all of its
insurance runs as UW-Superior tallied once in the fifth and four times
in the sixth, getting a two-run homer from Melissa Kunzelman to pull
within 7-5. However, Pointers pitcher Hope Krause did not allow another
hit and earned the complete game victory. All five runs allowed by
Krause were unearned as she struck out four and walked none. |
