Brooks Has Big
Day as Pointers Reach 30 Wins
Korryn Brooks had a huge day to help the
UW-Stevens Point softball team achieve its first 30-win softball season
since 1999 by sweeping a pair of non-conference games from St. Norbert
on Saturday in De Pere by scores of 9-5 and 5-3.
Brooks, a Stevens Point native, went
five-for-seven with three home runs and eight RBIs in the two games as
the Pointers, ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III, concluded the
regular season with a 30-6 overall record. UW-Stevens Point has clinched
the second seed for next weekends Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference tournament in Eau Claire.
UW-Stevens Point was scheduled to face
Edgewood in a doubleheader on Sunday at home, but the games have been
cancelled.
Brooks started fast by hitting home runs in
each of her first two at-bats of the opening game. After Jackie Berger
hit a solo home run in the first inning, Brooks delivered a two-run shot
and then had a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning.
The Pointers went ahead 7-2 in the fifth as
Brooks hit a sacrifice fly and Stephanie Anderson had a two-run single.
The Pointers added two more runs in the sixth with four straight singles
after two outs, including run-scoring hits from Laura Van Abel and
Brooks, who finished the opener three-for-three with four RBIs. Berger
and Mandy Jellish were also three-for-three as the Pointers first four
hitters were a combined 11-for-12. Anderson pitched a complete game with
five strikeouts to run her season record to 17-3.
Brooks had a run-scoring single in the opening
inning of the second game before St. Norbert tied the game on a leadoff
home run by Tracy Palmer. The game remained tied until the sixth when
Anderson scored on a two-out wild pitch. Brooks then finished her big
day with a three-run homer in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. St. Norbert
scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on base
when Hope Krause worked out of the jam. Krause pitched a complete game,
scattering 10 hits to improve her record to 13-2 for the season.
Anderson was three-for-four in the second
game and Brooks was two-for-four with four RBIs. Jellish finished
two-for-three. |
