One Inning
Results in Split for Pointers and Falcons
A three-run UW-River Falls sixth inning in the
opening game cost the UW-Stevens Point softball team a sweep in a
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday in
River Falls.
The Pointers dropped the opening game 3-2, but
then continued their torrid hitting in the second game with a 9-0 rout
of the Falcons. UW-Stevens Point scored 48 runs in its six games over
the past five days and is now 24-6 overall and 9-3 in the WIAC. UW-River
Falls entered the day in a tie for first place and is now 25-7 overall
and 8-2 in the WIAC.
UW-Stevens Point scored both of its runs in
the opening game in the fourth inning as Stephanie Anderson and Sarah
Phillips hit back-to-back doubles to open the frame. Chelsea McIlquham
then added a run-scoring single with two outs for the second run.
UW-River Falls countered in the sixth as Emily
Howlett and Kori Feller had consecutive run-scoring singles to tie the
game and Amanda Peters drove in the go-ahead run on a bunt single.
Anderson took the loss, allowing six hits and
striking out seven. The Pointers had eight hits against Falcons� pitcher
Ashley Bertrand, but left eight runners on base. Mandy Jellish and Laura
Van Abel were each two-for-four.
In the second game, The Pointers scored three
runs in the second inning as Danielle Ashbeck ripped a two-run triple
and scored on a groundout by Jellish. Korryn Brooks added a run-scoring
double in the third for a 4-0 lead and the Pointers put up five more
runs in the fifth. Van Abel drilled a three-run homer before Anderson
had a run-scoring double and Melissa Boldt added a run-scoring single.
Hope Krause pitched a complete-game shutout,
scattering seven hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
The Pointers play their fourth road conference
doubleheader in a six-day span on Monday when they travel to
UW-Platteville for two games at 3 p.m. |
