One Inning Results in Split for Pointers and Falcons

A three-run UW-River Falls sixth inning in the opening game cost the UW-Stevens Point softball team a sweep in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday in River Falls.

The Pointers dropped the opening game 3-2, but then continued their torrid hitting in the second game with a 9-0 rout of the Falcons. UW-Stevens Point scored 48 runs in its six games over the past five days and is now 24-6 overall and 9-3 in the WIAC. UW-River Falls entered the day in a tie for first place and is now 25-7 overall and 8-2 in the WIAC.

UW-Stevens Point scored both of its runs in the opening game in the fourth inning as Stephanie Anderson and Sarah Phillips hit back-to-back doubles to open the frame. Chelsea McIlquham then added a run-scoring single with two outs for the second run.

UW-River Falls countered in the sixth as Emily Howlett and Kori Feller had consecutive run-scoring singles to tie the game and Amanda Peters drove in the go-ahead run on a bunt single.

Anderson took the loss, allowing six hits and striking out seven. The Pointers had eight hits against Falcons pitcher Ashley Bertrand, but left eight runners on base. Mandy Jellish and Laura Van Abel were each two-for-four.

In the second game, The Pointers scored three runs in the second inning as Danielle Ashbeck ripped a two-run triple and scored on a groundout by Jellish. Korryn Brooks added a run-scoring double in the third for a 4-0 lead and the Pointers put up five more runs in the fifth. Van Abel drilled a three-run homer before Anderson had a run-scoring double and Melissa Boldt added a run-scoring single.

Hope Krause pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits with no walks and no strikeouts.

The Pointers play their fourth road conference doubleheader in a six-day span on Monday when they travel to UW-Platteville for two games at 3 p.m.
