Pointers Roll to
Sweep Over Northland
UW-Stevens Point pounded out 17 runs and 22 hits
to roll to a doubleheader softball sweep over Northland by 5-1 and 12-1
scores on Monday, extending its winning streak to five straight games.
The Pointers also got a complete game four-hit
pitching performance from Hope Krause in the opening game and a
dominating relief performance from Stephanie Anderson in the second game
to improve to 15-3 overall.
In the opener, UW-Stevens Point scored three
runs in the second inning as Mandy Jellish and Laura Van Abel each had
run-scoring singles. Van Abel added an RBI double in the fourth and
scored on a single by Korryn Brooks.
Northland scored its run in the fourth inning
on a wild pitch, snapping Krause�s consecutive scoreless innings streak
at 21 straight. She retired the final eight batters she faced and
finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts. In fact, the strikeout total
matched her season total through her first 36 and two-thirds innings
this year.
Van Abel was three-for-four, while Jellish and
Melissa Boldt were each two-for-four to account for seven of the
Pointers� 10 hits.
UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 5-1 lead in
the second game and then blew the game open with a seven-run fourth
inning. Van Abel had a run-scoring triple and Anderson delivered a
two-run double in the fourth inning. Both were two-for-three, while
Jellish and Boldt were also two-for-three.
Allison Dorn started on the mound for the
Pointers and allowed three hits and one run over two innings. Anderson
relived her in the third and walked the first batter before striking out
eight straight batters and getting a fly out to end the game.
The Pointers play a doubleheader Tuesday at
UW-La Crosse. |
