Pointers Roll to Sweep Over Northland

UW-Stevens Point pounded out 17 runs and 22 hits to roll to a doubleheader softball sweep over Northland by 5-1 and 12-1 scores on Monday, extending its winning streak to five straight games.

The Pointers also got a complete game four-hit pitching performance from Hope Krause in the opening game and a dominating relief performance from Stephanie Anderson in the second game to improve to 15-3 overall.

In the opener, UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the second inning as Mandy Jellish and Laura Van Abel each had run-scoring singles. Van Abel added an RBI double in the fourth and scored on a single by Korryn Brooks.

Northland scored its run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, snapping Krauses consecutive scoreless innings streak at 21 straight. She retired the final eight batters she faced and finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts. In fact, the strikeout total matched her season total through her first 36 and two-thirds innings this year.

Van Abel was three-for-four, while Jellish and Melissa Boldt were each two-for-four to account for seven of the Pointers 10 hits.

UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second game and then blew the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. Van Abel had a run-scoring triple and Anderson delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning. Both were two-for-three, while Jellish and Boldt were also two-for-three.

Allison Dorn started on the mound for the Pointers and allowed three hits and one run over two innings. Anderson relived her in the third and walked the first batter before striking out eight straight batters and getting a fly out to end the game.

The Pointers play a doubleheader Tuesday at UW-La Crosse.
