Pointers Save Dramatics for Season Opening Win UW-Stevens Point won four dramatic games to cap the 2006 season, but may have saved one of its most thrilling finishes for the opening game in 2007.

win over Webber International on Saturday in Sophomore transfer Michael Ferron rushed for 137 yards in his UW-Stevens Point debut and the Pointers� defense held the Warriors to just 110 yards in the second half while forcing five turnovers in the game. Webber International scored the game�s first points on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Carr to Sergio Rivera with 4:53 left in the first quarter. The Warriors had chances for more points, but the Pointers stopped them twice inside the 20-yard line with a fumble and on downs. The first half included a 40-minute weather delay with 11:17 left in the second quarter and the Pointers were unable to muster much offense with an entirely new offensive backfield. UW-Stevens Point managed 95 total yards in the first half, but came out strong in the second half as Kasey Morgan returned the second half kickoff to the Warriors� 43-yard line and six plays later, Ferron sprinted 16 yards up the middle for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. With less than two minutes left in the game, Pointers� punter Luke Frisch pinned the Warriors at their own five-yard line. UW-Stevens Point�s defense forced a punt after the Warriors gained nine yards in three plays and Webber International punter Travis Tubbs blasted an 84-yard punt to the two-yard line. However, the Warriors were called for a penalty and forced to re-kick when Robinson burst through and blocked it. Jason Barber had the Pointers� fourth interception on the game�s final play to seal the win. The Pointers gained 253 total yards with 182 rushing yards and 71 passing yards. Webber International had 323 total yards with 199 yards passing and 124 rushing. |
